Clydebank’s MP is enjoying high polling numbers in an unusual contest rating Britain’s parliamentarians.
Labour’s Gemma Doyle, who represents West Dunbartonshire at Westminster, has been voted into the top 10 percent of members of parliament by visitors to website sexymp.co.uk. The people behind the site understand their poll is potentially offensive but defend it as a fun way of helping the public become more familiar with their elected representatives.
Website creator Francis Boulle explained: ”Although I fully expect this to offend some people this was never my intention and I hope most will see the funny side. I thought holding the first-ever parliamentary beauty contest, finding out once and for all which MPs and parties have the most sex-appeal, would be a fun and memorable tool to help the British public get to know their members of parliament.”
All MPs – male and female – are rated by the site, and for those interested the person currently rated as Britain’s sexiest parliamentarian is a man: Jamie Reed, the 38-year-old Labour MP for Copeland in Cumbria.
The highest polling female MP is Bristol North West’s Charlotte Leslie – a 33-year-old Liverpudlian who won the key marginal seat for the Conservatives at the last election. Ms Leslie, an Oxford educated former policy researcher and expert in special needs education, sits in third place overall.
No doubt West Dunbartonshire’s Gemma Doyle will be far more concerned with representing her constituents, and speaking for the Labour Party as a shadow defence minister, than she will be in her rating. However, if the MP was to take a break from the hard work she might enjoy hearing voters placed her above more than 90 percent of her fellow members of the House of Commons.
Ms Doyle, who was first elected in 2010, is currently 57th of the 650 members of parliament. We thought about asking for a comment but it hardly seemed worth interrupting a busy MP’s day. However, if you’re reading Gemma: Congratulations from your constituents at Clydebank Live.
